Elvis Dumervil sacks Tom Brady
Here we see the Patriots offensive line get confused with assignments, and Dumervil was able to run free and give Brady a "shake, rattle, and roll" all in one hit. The New England Patriots defeated the Denver Broncos 41-23.

WOODSTOCK 99 Revisited
I wouldn't say the Summer of 1999 was a lazy summer for a teenager like me at the time, but for one unforgettable weekend I was glued to a TV seeing what at the time were some of the best bands that music had to offer.MTV broadcasted the entire concert (without any VJs talking over it I might add which made it even more awesome) for those 3 days. It was the 1st time I had ever seen a concert in that way on TV in my life, and I was hooked.lots of great Rock,Electronic and HipHop Bands filled out the schedule, but the following moments are the ones that were most memorable to me.
I remember tuning in a bit late on the Friday, and being a little pissed I only saw the last 10 minutes of the OFFSPRING, but honestly I was only interested in seeing the headliners 'KORN'. The band appealed to me like crazy,I thought Munky was da shit, and their album ' Freak On A Leash' was probably the most played album by me and my friends that summer.
Safe to say lead singer Jonathan went all out that night. There were a few moments after each of his songs where he went completely nuts and I thought the guy would have a heart attack.
I also was starting to notice how huge and bad ass the crowd was.More on that later....
I still regard The Offsprings album 'SMASH' as one of the best albums I've ever heard. By 1999 the band had gone a bit commercial but still somewhat likeable to me still. They still played a lot of their earlier songs like 'Bad Habit' in the video above, the ultimate don't fuck with me while I'm driving song. At the end of the video is one particular memorable moment as well, involving the Backstreet Boys, Cardboard cutouts, lots of trash,a baseball bat, and a lot of people that weren't exactly fans of the boy band.A defining moment for the anti boy band lovers and MTV showing it was pretty funny.
The night ended with BUSH headlining.Overall a pretty good performance but I was already pretty spent from headbanging to KORN.
SATURDAY JULY 24th 1999, the main day for WOODSTOCK 99, this was the day everyone was looking forward too. The powerful 3 in the Main Stage, up and comers Limp Bizkit, The awesomeness of RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE,and the great Metallica (my fave band of all time.)
I was also starting to notice the crowd a bit more.MTV would show little clips of how the people were living there in tents and even have little raves and do other fun things at night. The drugs were everywhere too, but it all seemed good natured....for now.
The crowds were suffering from not enough water, the prices for bottled water were through the roof. At the stages, the crowd started needed to have to be water hosed on and there was hundreds of people needing medical help because of the lack of water.
One part of this Woodstock that also resembled the one in 1969, the nakedness. Constant crowd shots of hot girls with their bare boobs brought out the Beavis and Butthead in me, it was cool heheheheh. But of course there was some disturbing nude people as well, but thankfully the camera never showed much of that.
As Limp Bizkit came on that night, the crowd was getting a bit restless with the atmosphere.Limps music would make them crazier, and as you can see in the video above, the crowd was starting to destroy one of the sound towers. The scene of people surfing with multiple broken off big pieces of wood was excellent, and Limps lead singer decided to join in on the fun and do it himself as he sung his bands version of George Michaels 'Faith'. The rest was history. (camera randomly showing Verne Troyer was so awesome).
Enjoyed the hell out of Rage Against The Machines performance.Metallica,my number 1 band was next.I was so psyched.
Buttt hold on one second, MTV switched over to the other stage, and one of the bands that got me into Electronic Music was on. It was the first time I had ever seen them LIVE, this was gonna be awesome..and it was. This was MY music of the moment (along with trance)and the sight right before the Chem Brothers came on, of a video projector showing weird images and the trance song GOURYELLA - GOURYELLA playing in the background to everybody was the point where I really realized this music had arrived to the mainstream.
They showed the Chemical Brothers for about 20 minutes (boobs galore everywhere too) while Metallica was setting up on the Main Stage. As much I loved Metallica, I felt kinda bad when they cut away from the Chemical Brothers.
Now it was time for the legends.
Metallica BROUGHT IT. To a point where I think they had about 3 encores of about 3 songs each time. They looked tired as hell but the crowed wanted MORE MORE MORE.The epic intro as shown in this video was only the begining of a epic and LONG performance.
Saturday was too crazy. I was spent from seeing all that great stuff. As Sunday came upon me, the bands seemed very lightweight to me,some notable random acts included GODSMACK,Jewel,Sevendust, Collective Soul,Creed,MEGADEATH,and The MUSE. I was only extremely looking forward to the Chili Peppers at the end.
As the concert was ending with the Chili Peppers playing on main stage (and unfortunetly a completely naked Flea with his dong out all performance)there was a good number of crazy people who were starting to set the big pieces of wood from the soundtower on fire. The scene of bonfires all over Woodstock was now seen and many scared concert goers were starting to leave a bit early cause of it.
In a way it was only fitting that the craziness of that concert weekend would end in that way.The MTV news VJs finally appeared during the Broadcast reporting on the happenings, sometimes even cutting into the Chili Peppers performance.I remember seeing the sight of a scared for his life Carson Daly and thought it was pretty funny in particular. In the vid below are the random news clips about the fires and aftermath of WoodStock 99.
In the end while all the attention went to everything but the music,I was and will always remember it for more than just that, but for also it being one of the best concerts musically I had ever seen.I didn't even attend it, but 17 year old me wishes he would have. But thanks MTV for showing it on PPV that weekend. Its one of the few things you've done right.

Seth Green & MC Hammer
What do Seth Green and MC Hammer have in common?
While watching ESPN's 30 for 30 The Marinovich Project, they showed a clip of the Monday Night Football game between the Los Angeles Raiders and New Orleans Saints on December 16, 1991. To recap 1991, it was a breakout year for the Saints. They started the season 7-0 before losing to the Chicago Bears at home on a game-winning touchdown pass from Jim Harbaugh to Tom Waddle. After that game, Saints starting QB Bobby Hebert was put on injured reserve, and the Saints promoted former University of Miami star Steve Walsh as the starting QB. Walsh struggled losing the last 4 games before the Monday Night Football game. The Saints-Raiders game marked the return of Bobby Hebert.
Meanwhile, the Raiders were considered a tough team who won games in an unfashionable way. They were led by Jay Schroeder at quarterback, Marcus Allen at running back, Tim Brown at wide receiver, and a collection of playmakers on the defensive side.
Both teams entered the night with a 9-5 record. In 1991, a popular commercial was played on a regular basis by Rally's Hamburgers.
The catch phrase "Cha-Ching!" was the theme of the 1991 Saints season. I remember there was a point during the year where the words "Cha-Ching!" were said more than "Who Dat!", which is an old traditional Saints phrase for many years. T-shirts, bumper stickers, and billboards flooded the New Orleans streets. As the Saints continued their winnings ways to lead to their first division championship in franchise history, the phrase, commercial, and Rally's were constantly mentioned. That Monday, Seth Green, the 17 year old star of the commercial, was honored by the City of New Orleans. He made an appearance during the football game to give an honorary "Cha-Ching!" to 70,000 people at the Louisiana Superdome.
The Saints dominated the football game that night, outgaining the Raiders in total yards 427-147. The Saints "Dome Patrol" defense constantly pressured Jay Schroeder, and knocked him out late in the game, forcing the Raiders to play Vince Evans, instead of rookie Todd Marinovich, as the quarterback. The Saints won the game with the final score 27-0.
Fast forward to January, the Saints met division rival foes Atlanta Falcons in the NFC Wild Card game, and lost 27-20. The Falcons had their own theme in 1991.
MC Hammer - 2 Legit 2 Quit
Seth Green started his career doing commercials while MC Hammer sang multiple #1 hits. They were a part of an NFL team catch phrase in 1991. Today, Seth Green is an accomplished actor, director, writer, and producer while MC Hammer is a forgotten name who is brought up during a reminiscence of the 1990s.

Random Classics: Larry Bird fouls Bernard King
We all know those great 1980's basketball teams like the 76ers, Lakers, Pistons, Suns, and Celtics. A lot of competitive basketball and bad blood was never lost. Players were never afraid to leave everything on the court, no matter how much more or less was on the line. A good example is Larry Bird. Here is an example of Bird stopping Bernard King on a fast break:
Nothing was on the line between these two teams, but Larry Bird was willing to give King a good message that things were not going to be easy against his team.

Soul Glo Hall Of Fame - Eric Dickerson
With Michael Cage being the first inductee into the Soul Glo Hall Of Fame, we now look back at another athletes career that displayed his soul glo proudly for a point in his career, our 2nd inductee,Eric Dickerson.
If we made an athletes with goggles hall of fame then he'd also be on that Mount Rushmore, but back on topic here...Erics flashy lifestyle, even since his college days at SMU ,fit perfectly with his hair.(ESPN's 30for30 documentary on SMU's Football program was just amazing, vid below of Dickersons segment)
Dickersons career while with the hair in Los Angeles was a great one
so good in fact, at one point Dickersons Rams made a hilariously awkward music video featuring 'Top Gun' Dickerson himself and his teammates telling us how they RAM IT
yes Eric if we had your hair we'd be Ramming it all night with the ladies too.

NFL the way it USED to be
watching some of the videos in butters' piece about chester mcglockton made me think, man, the presentation of the NFL on sundays has come a long way over the years. my first football memories definitely involved pat and john on NFC games on CBS, and paul maguire doing nfl games on NBC (and later he worked with joe theismann and mike patrick on sunday night football on espn). i don't remember much about monday night football growing up because it was usually way too late for me to stay up and watch the whole game, but i do remember a combination of al michaels, frank gifford, and dan dierdorf. well, commenting about the old broadcast teams isn't what i wanted to write about.
i wanted to comment on the 80 minute gap between the late pm and sunday night games. it used to be that espn would present the sunday night games, and would have the NFL highlight show all to themselves in the lead-up to SNF. chris berman was MADE for NFL primetime, and tom jackson would provide insightful comments during the highlights. there wasn't much bull from what i remember, just the meat and potatoes of every game that happened at 1 and 4 EST. it was appointment viewing for me every sunday night during the football season at college.
with NBC buying SNF, i guess the NFL awarded NBC its own exclusive highlight show, so now we have the pretentious football night in america pregame show. the presentation of the day's games just don't seem as slick or well narrated like what chris and tom did. i also feel like there are just too many people on the set. in the show's first year, nbc had jerome bettis, cris collinsworth, bob costas, peter king, and sterling sharpe. do you really need that many voices for an 80 minute show? jeebus!
it's a comfort still to watch chris berman and tom jackson do their own highlights in the blitz on sunday night sportscenters, but you never know when the two are on because they are intertwined with the rest of sportscenter for the 11pm edition. i want them to go back to doing primetime at 730pm. how i miss those days.

R.I.P. Chester McGlockton
Rest in peace to one of the top NFL defensive tackles in the 1990s. Chester McGlockton passed away on November 30, 2011 due to a heart attack at the age of 42. While at Clemson University, he was a perennial player which led to being the 16th pick in the 1st round of the 1992 NFL draft by the Los Angeles Raiders.
He was in the NFL for 12 years with 4 different teams (Raiders, Chiefs, Broncos, Jets) with a total of 551 tackles, 51 sacks, and 4 interceptions. His best years were from 1994-97 where he was selected to the Pro Bowl in each of the years. In 1995, he was selected to the First-Team All-Pro team.
Growing up, I remember that random Raiders defense who had a ferocious front 4 with Jerry Ball, Nolan Harrison, Anthony Smith, and McGlockton.
These are hilights of the Raiders defense in the 1990s. They had a good number of playmakers who had a nose for the ball.
This is a NFL Primetime from 1995 that reviews a Week 8 game between the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders. A good clip because it brings back memories of the Colts and Raiders players from 1995. In 1:03, Anthony Smith and McGlockton crush Harbaugh, taking him out of the game. The Raiders win this game 30-17 to go 6-2.
Here is another NFL Primetime from 1995 that reviews the Week 15 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders. As we can see, the Raiders front 4 were able to apply pressure to O'Donnell, but unfortunately the Raiders fell short at the end. They lost the game 29-10 to go 8-6.
This is an NFL Primetime clip from 1994 Week 6 that reviews the game between the Oakland Raiders and New England Patriots. Once again, we see the Raiders front 4 were able to apply pressure to Drew Bledsoe and cause havoc. The Raiders win the game 21-17 to go 2-3 for the year.
Watching these clips, I do miss the old mid 1990s quarterbacks: Jim Harbaugh, Drew Bledsoe, Kordell Stewart, Neil O'Donnell, Billy Joe Hobert, and Jeff Hostetler. Rest in peace to a solid defensive tackle who will be missed. Chester McGlockton.

NHL's proposed realignment
the NHL board of governors just approved a radical 4-conference alignment that could possibly begin as early as next year. this guarantees that all teams will play at minimum a home-and-home with every other team in the league. i'm glad this is coming back, as i didn't like the idea of having to wait a few years for say, the avs or red wings to make their way to madison square garden to play the rangers. ultimately, travel plans were put into consideration, and the move of the atlanta thrashers franchise to winnipeg seems to have been a considerable factor in this new realignment proposed by the league.
the nhl proposes the following conferences:
Conference "A" | Conference "B" | Conference "C" | Conference "D" |
---|---|---|---|
Anaheim | Chicago | Boston | Carolina |
Calgary | Columbus | Buffalo | New Jersey |
Colorado | Dallas | Florida | NY Islanders |
Edmonton | Detroit | Montreal | NY Rangers |
Los Angeles | Minnesota | Ottawa | Philly |
Phoenix | Nashville | Tampa Bay | Pittsburgh |
San Jose | St. Louis | Toronto | Washington |
Vancouver | Winnipeg |
i think for the most part, the teams out west seem to be aligned fairly well geographically, and seems to keep intact long standing rivalries, such as edmonton-calgary, calgary-vancouver, and local rivalries (LA-Anaheim). i'm bothered more by the eastern conferences. i'm fairly disappointed that the rangers do not have another original six team within the same conference. why is carolina lumped into the conference with mostly mid-atlantic teams? why are the panthers and lightning in the same conference with mostly northeast US and southeast Canadian teams? originally this was how i thought the eastern conference SHOULD look.
Eastern Conference "1" | Eastern Conference "2" |
---|---|
Boston | Buffalo |
Montreal | Carolina |
New Jersey | Florida |
NY Islanders | Ottawa |
NY Rangers | Pittsburgh |
Philly | Tampa Bay |
Toronto | Washington |
in this instance, you would keep all the eastern original six teams together, and keep intact most regional rivalries except for pittsburgh-philly. pittsburgh has had a budding rivalry with washington the last few years, obviously coinciding with the emergence of crosby, malkin, and ovechkin, so i think this would kind of offset the keystone state rivalry. but this kind of makes no sense. the more i thought about it, the better the following alignment looks.
Eastern Conference "1" | Eastern Conference "2" |
---|---|
Boston | Buffalo |
New Jersey | Carolina |
NY Islanders | Florida |
NY Rangers | Montreal |
Philly | Ottawa |
Pittsburgh | Tampa Bay |
Washington | Toronto |
this seems to make the most sense geographically, given the i-95 corridor in the northeast (except for pittsburgh). you get to keep the philly-pittsburgh rivalry with this alignment. rangers-bruins and montreal-toronto are classic original six matchups that would never get old. montreal, ottawa, and toronto can battle it out for eastern canada supremacy; buffalo is close enough to toronto obviously to have a regional rivalry there. and then you have carolina, tampa bay, and florida battling it out in the southeastern part of the US. it's true that the second eastern conference seems to have two separate pods of activity, but it's kind of hard to do the eastern conference teams without breaking up existing rivalries. what do you think of the proposed alignment by the NHL?

i was watching the end of texas vs texas A&M over thanksgiving break (the last possible texas showdown?) when i happened to espy the above person seemingly celebrating A&M's last score of the game. i hope the rest of her thanksgiving weekend was better.
thanks to espn for opportunistically panning its cameras to the right person at the right time.

The day a NFL Kicker lost his job for missing one FG
Two of the best teams in the NFL in 1991 faced off in a epic match-up on Week 10 as the 7-1 Houston Oilers traveled to Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium to face the undefeated Mark Rypien led Washington Redskins.
As with almost every important, tightly contested match-up, the result usually falls on a single player making a great play or blunder. Thus was the case with Ian Howfield, only in this case, the Oilers Kicker lost his job because he missed a easy FG with one second left in the game that would've won it (bare in mind he had made his 2 other attempted FG's earlier). The redskins eventually won in OT.
The next day, pissed off Oilers Coach Jack Pardee looking to make an example because of the loss, cut the lonely kicker, who was seen departing the Oilers facility in tears. And in came a kicker who would eventually stick with the team for 9 seasons, Al Del Greco.
For Howfield, the cruel life of a NFL kicker hit him strong.
His dad Bobby, also made a career of it after his soccer playing days in England, where he kicked with the Broncos and New York Jets between 1968-74. Ian , who was also born in England, decided to follow his dads footsteps and have a American Football career.
The next 2 seasons Ian tried his best to be a starting kicker again but never made it out of the practice squad with the Eagles and Bucs. The Arena Football League came calling in '93 and Ian was finally a starting kicker.
However 4 years later, his career was almost cut short as he was involved in a serious car accident which nearly took his life.He received two disk fusions in his lower back and an entire right knee cartilage replacement.
He returned to the league in 2003 after intensive rehab from the car accident and wound up winning the Arena Bowl with the Tampa Bay Storm that same year.He would officially retire a year later.
Why I drew my interest to this random kicker to write a blog about it? As a kid in 1991 in Miami at the age of 9 years old, while my parents worked in a indoor flea market, I would sometimes head over to the Sports Collectibles/Cards store nearby and watch ESPN on their TV. To this day I remember the Card Shop owner commenting while shaking his head "wow the poor sap misses one kick and he's out of the league,". That was the day I realized that Pro Sports was a very cut throat environment and the pressures that come with it.
Ians story ,while disappointing in the NFL, also shows that the man never gave up and followed his dream. The game against the Redskins is an afterthought to many(except for some NFL historian dorks like me now), but in a way it is always cool to revisit old random moments.
*Jack Pardees Coaching Career in Houston only lasted 3 more years (which included the historically epic choke job in the playoffs vs Buffalo )and he quit in 1994 after a 1-9 start to the season. He coached in the CFL one year and never coached again after anywhere.
